Overton’s Window
Concept
Overton’s Window is a musical experiment with the political concept of the same name. In short, the window is used to categorize the public’s opinion on certain matters. Things that fall within the window are the things the public generally see as acceptable. Over time, Overton’s Window moves; what was seen as evil or problematic fifty years ago may be seen differently today. Opinions can also vary depending on the context in which we interact with them. We deem certain things as publicly acceptable within the context of a horror film that we likely would not if seen on a children’s show. This piece experiments with these ideas in musical form. The piece starts as welcoming before introducing a musical idea that is likely to be seen as dissonant and outside Overton’s Window. The goal is then to use context to make that same musical idea fall within Overton’s Window for the listener when it is played again near the end of the piece.
